Lake Charles Millennium Park Closure: What Visitors Should Know
Lake Charles, LA [KNGT-FM] - One of the most popular spots for families and kids to go to is closing for a few weeks to get some improvements. The City of Lake Charles made the announcement that Millennium Park will temporarily close beginning yesterday, March 25, 2026, for the next few weeks.
The park has been a part of the community for more than two decades, first opening its gates in September of 2000. For years, it quickly became a go-to destination for families, where parents could bring their kids to enjoy the playground, burn off energy, and make lasting memories.

However, that long-standing tradition came to an abrupt and heartbreaking end in 2011 when a devastating fire destroyed the park. Volunteers from all over Southwest Louisiana came together and helped rebuild the park to what it is today.
The good news, the park is not being closed due to major damage, but for surface improvement. Katie Harrington with the city of Lake Charles describes the improvements as:
The Lake Charles City Council recently accepted bids for a project to replace the park’s existing anti-fall surface. This upgrade will transition the current pour-in-place material to a turf surface, providing enhanced durability, improved maintenance capabilities, and greater longevity for park users. -Katie Harrington City of Lake Charles
They also said that the project is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete. Lake Charles city officials are hoping to reopen Millennium Park by Friday, April 17, if the weather permits. Harrington said that a final reopening date will be announced once construction is complete and conditions allow for safe public access.
