Top 5 Thanksgiving Desserts

Coming in at number 5, is something called Persimmon Pie With Pecan Streusel. I’m gonna be real with y’all. I have lived here in SWLA and I’ve eaten stuff most folks can’t even pronounce. But a persimmon pie ain’t never showed up at any Thanksgiving I’ve been to. Not once. I don’t even know anybody who’s made one. Southern Living says it’s rich and warm and full of fall flavor, but to me it sounds like somebody just pulled that one out the woods and hoped for the best. Maybe it’s good. Maybe it’s not. I guess somebody out there is making it, but it sure ain’t anybody in my family.

Number 4 is a classic. Apple Pie. Simple, sweet, warm, and always hits the spot. Some folks top it with ice cream. Some folks don’t. Either way, it’s a safe and solid Thanksgiving choice. You put apple pie on the table, somebody’s eating it.

Number 3, German Chocolate Cake. which I have 2 problems with, first don't mix coconut shavings with a cake....just no. And second I have never been to a thanksgiving in my 43 years where this was even on the menu.

Number 2, Pumpkin Pie. This is a have to for any Thankgiving day events. You can’t go anywhere in November without bumping into a pumpkin something.

And number 1, the king of the South, the undefeated champion, Pecan Pie. Now this one, I understand. Rich, sweet, sticky, crunchy. That sugar hits you like a warm hug. This is the dessert that ends Thanksgiving right. If pecan pie ain’t on the table, folks start asking questions.

So there you go. Southern Living’s list. Some classics, some surprises, and one thing I still ain’t sure actually exists. But no matter what you serve, as long as your people are around and everybody’s laughing, that’s Thanksgiving done right.
