Bronx Zoo Reports Tiger Tested Positive for Coronavirus
A four-year-old female tiger living at the Bronx Zoo in New York is now the first feline tiger to test positive for coronavirus. Nadia, the tiger, showed symptoms of a dry cough and was tested for it. The article from CNN says she is expected to make a full recovery from the virus. The zoo also says that five other tigers were showing the same symptoms as Nadia was.
The test used on the tiger is not the same type of test used on humans. It was done in a laboratory at a veterinary school. Although the zoo has been closed to the public since March 16, it is believed that she was infected by a handler employee of the zoo.
Your next question, being from Louisiana, is what about Mike the Tiger? The LSU mascot has had no direct contact with his caretakers in over three weeks. This was even before the Bronx Zoo report. Ginger Guttner, of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, told Where Yat that his caretakers wear gloves and masks while being around him. He is being monitored closely and can be viewed on the LSU Tiger Cam.
