What Every Cajun Needs in Their Tackle Box This Spring
🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — Spring is in the Air. The weather’s starting to warm up, the sun’s staying out a little longer, and folks all over Southwest Louisiana are getting back outside again.
There’s just something about being outside that hits different. Whether it’s cooking in the backyard, riding around, or heading down to the river… it just feels right. And for me, fishing is always at the top of my list.
Now to be honest… life’s been busy lately. Between early mornings on the radio, work, and running all over the place, I haven’t been fishing near as much as I’d like. So the other day I got to thinking… if I’m gonna get back out there, I better get my tackle box ready.
What should every Cajun actually have in their tackle box?
Well, according to the Farmers’ Almanac, there’s a pretty solid checklist that’ll keep you ready for just about anything when you hit the water.
First off, you gotta have the basics. Extra fishing line is a must. Ain’t nothing worse than your line snapping and you stuck watching fish jump while you can’t do a thing about it. You’ll also want a good mix of lures or flies, plus some bobbers so you can keep an eye on your line.
Then there’s the stuff folks sometimes forget. Swivels help keep your line from twisting up. Leaders give you a little extra strength. Sinkers help get that bait down where the fish are hanging out. And don’t forget different hook sizes… not every fish out there is playing the same game.
Now let’s talk about the “real life” items. Needle nose pliers… those are gonna save you when you gotta get a hook out, especially if things go sideways. A stringer helps you keep your catch fresh. And a sharp knife? Yeah, you’ll use that more than you think.
You’ll also want a ruler or scale, because let’s be honest… if you don’t measure it, did you even catch it? Throw in a small flashlight, especially if you’re out early or staying late.
And don’t forget the most important things. A small first-aid kit, just in case. Some bug spray, because lets face it, we live in Louisiana. And sunscreen… trust me, you don’t wanna learn that lesson the hard way.
So if you’re like me and getting that itch to get back on the water… might be time to dust off that tackle box and make sure you’re ready.
Because one thing about South Louisiana… when the weather gets right, the fish start biting… and you don’t wanna be the one who ain’t ready.
